Closing repository void spaces using bentonite: does heat make a difference?

نویسندگان

چکیده

Bentonites are commonly proposed for use in the geological disposal of high heat generating radioactive wastes. Repository designs include bentonite as a buffer to occupy void space around waste canisters because favourable properties it can exhibit that enhance isolation and containment functionality repository. Many repository concepts introduce small voids within is incorporated individual bricks stacked canisters. These must be closed prevent persistence permeability pathways fluids. As hydrates, expands exert considerable swelling pressure on surrounding host rock. The also fill engineering cavities inherently present repository, but non-uniform development total stress pore could cause persistent material heterogeneities occur. This likely exacerbated by thermal gradients existing between hot temperature rock early stages post-closure. Whilst this an area ongoing research, final extent homogenisation how long property variations persist, not well understood. In study, four tests were conducted pre-compacted, sodium-activated MX80 samples placed next water-filled void, examine effect elevated function sample size. lengths chosen give bentonite-to-void ratios, represent extremities behaviour, such acceptable upper limit size might established. results demonstrated even under extreme was able swell completely space, exerting measurable pressure. Under conditions have shown larger end-of-test pressures higher dry densities along their entire length than equivalent at ambient temperature. addition, showed rapid initial increase then decrease start testing, approaching asymptote more quickly, whilst uptaking less water case. implied heating reduced test duration about 60%, which most explained reduction viscosity permeant temperatures.

Does Quantity Make a Difference?

Do highly productive researchers have significantly higher probability to produce top cited papers? Or does the increased productivity in science only result in a sea of irrelevant papers as a perverse effect of competition and the increased use of indicators for research evaluation and accountability focus? We use a Swedish author disambiguated dataset consisting of 48,000 researchers and thei...

Does sex make a difference?

When it comes to health risks, sex does matter. Women are twice as likely as men to get multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and migraines. They're also more likely to get cataracts, hepatitis, and thyroid disease. Women experience depression about twice as often as men. And irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is thought to affect twice as many women as men. Although men have more heart attacks...

Axillary irradiation in breast cancer; does meticulous contouring make a difference?

Background: Due to the current trends towards replacing axillary dissection with radiotherapy, the need for more precise definition for different nodal stations becomes a must to ensure safe and adequate dose coverage. So, our study aimed to evaluate the coverage of axillary nodal volumes based on Project on Cancer of the Breast (PROCAB) guidelines, for cases previously treated with our standar...

Does Head Start Make a Difference?

The impact of participation in Head Start is investigated using a national sample of children. Comparisons are drawn between siblings to control for selection. Head Start is associated with large and significant gains in test scores among both whites and African-Americans. However, among African-Americans, these gains are quickly lost. Head Start significantly reduces the probability that a whi...

Does Peace Education Really Make a Difference?

An inconsistency is pointed out between formidable and thus discouraging hurdles facing peace education in the context of intractable conflicts and actual, encouraging research findings of such programs. It is suggested that the hurdles pertain to the most deep-seated and thus unchangeable convictions constituting the backbone of a group’s collective narrative. On the other hand, the change-obj...
